Best Areas to Stay in Chefchaouen

Chefchaouen is compact, but the town is built on hills, stairs and narrow lanes, so location matters more than distance on a map. A riad that looks only a few minutes away can still mean a steep walk with luggage.
For most travelers, the choice comes down to two options:

• staying inside the Medina for atmosphere and easy access to the blue streets
• staying just outside the Medina for easier vehicle access and luggage handling

Neither is automatically better. The right choice depends on how much you value atmosphere, how you are arriving and how comfortable you are with hills and stairs.

Staying Inside the Medina

For most first-time visitors, staying inside the Medina gives the strongest Chefchaouen experience. You step straight into the blue lanes, cafés, small shops and historic streets, with most sights only a short walk away.
The biggest advantage is timing. Early in the morning and later in the evening, after many day visitors have left, the Medina becomes much quieter. Staying inside lets you enjoy those hours without needing to travel back into town.
The trade-off is access. Some riads sit deep inside narrow lanes or higher on the hillside, which can mean stairs and uphill walking. If you are arriving with large luggage, ask the property where a taxi or driver can stop and whether they can help carry your bags.

Staying close to the edge of the Medina is a good alternative if you want easier access without being far from the old town.
Hotels and guesthouses in these areas are often easier to reach by taxi or car, and some offer parking or more convenient luggage access. You can still walk into the Medina for sightseeing, meals and evening walks without dealing with steep lanes every time you return to your room.
I particularly recommend this option for travelers arriving by rental car, anyone carrying heavy luggage and people who prefer easier day-to-day logistics.

You lose a little of the feeling of sleeping directly inside the blue streets, but the convenience can easily make up for it.

Medina or Outside? Which Is Better?

For a first visit, I would normally choose the Medina if you are comfortable with stairs and walking.
Choose just outside the Medina if easier arrival, parking or luggage access matters more to you.
The most important thing is not luxury. It is choosing a property whose exact location works for the way you travel. A simple riad with easy access can give you a much better stay than a more impressive hotel that becomes difficult to reach every day.

Best Types of Places to Stay in Chefchaouen

Chefchaouen has everything from small family guesthouses to stylish boutique riads. The right choice depends more on your budget and travel style than on the size of the property.

Luxury & Boutique Riads

Boutique stays work especially well in Chefchaouen because terraces and mountain views add a lot to the experience. Look for places with well-designed rooms, good service and outdoor spaces overlooking either the Medina or the Rif Mountains.
These properties are a good choice for couples, special trips and travelers who value design, views and a quieter atmosphere.

For most travelers, this is the sweet spot.

I would choose a simple place with good access and reliable hosts over the cheapest room hidden far uphill.

Local Tips for Choosing the Right Hotel in Chefchaouen

Before booking, look carefully at the property on the map and read recent reviews specifically for comments about stairs, noise and luggage access.
If the riad is inside the Medina, ask where the nearest taxi or driver drop-off point is. That small detail can make a big difference when you arrive.
A rooftop terrace is worth considering because Chefchaouen has excellent views over the blue rooftops and Rif Mountains.
If you are arriving late, avoid properties that require a difficult uphill walk unless the hotel has confirmed that someone can meet you.
Breakfast is also useful, especially for shorter stays when you want to start exploring early.
