Marrakech in December: Weather, Crowds & What to Expect

Marrakech in December is one of those trips where the weather can surprise you in a good way. You may be sitting on a sunny rooftop at lunchtime in a T-shirt, then looking for your jacket as soon as the sun goes down.

For sightseeing, I like December. The strong summer heat is gone, walking through the Medina is easier, and you can spend much more time outside without planning your whole day around the temperature.

The important thing is not to think of Marrakech as a hot winter destination all day and night. December mornings can be cool, shaded streets and riad courtyards can feel cold, and evenings are very different from sunny afternoons.

Quick Answer: Is Marrakech Good in December?

Yes. December is a very good month for Marrakech if your priority is sightseeing, food, shopping, culture and day trips rather than guaranteed hot weather.

During the day, the temperature is usually comfortable for walking through the souks, visiting palaces and gardens or having lunch outside. The city feels much easier to explore than during the hottest summer months.

What catches some travelers out is the change after sunset. A beautiful sunny afternoon does not mean a warm evening, especially if you are sitting outside or staying in a traditional riad.

Early December is generally easier for accommodation and reservations. The Christmas and end-of-year travel period brings more international visitors, so the final part of the month needs a little more planning.

What Is Marrakech Weather Like in December?

Long-term climate averages put Marrakech at around 19°C during the day and 6–7°C at night in December. For official seasonal planning information, you can also check the Marrakech tourism office’s weather and travel advice.

I would use those numbers only as a guide. What matters more when you are actually here is the difference between sun and shade and between midday and evening.

Sunny afternoons can feel warmer than the temperature suggests

On a clear December day, the sun can feel very pleasant. This is why you sometimes see people eating lunch outside or sitting on rooftops in light clothing even in the middle of winter.

If you are walking around the Medina from late morning into the afternoon, you may not feel cold at all while you are in direct sun.

Then you turn into a narrow shaded lane and the feeling changes immediately.

Shade in the Medina feels much cooler

Marrakech has many narrow streets where the sun does not reach for long during winter. Inside these streets, and particularly inside shaded riad courtyards, the temperature can feel much cooler than it did on an open terrace.

This is one reason I always tell travelers to dress in layers rather than looking only at the daytime temperature on their phone.

You do not need to carry a heavy winter coat all afternoon. You just need something you can put back on when you move into the shade or when the sun starts dropping.

Evenings get cold quickly

The biggest change normally comes around sunset.

A comfortable afternoon can turn into a chilly evening quite quickly. If you are walking back to your riad, having dinner on a terrace or spending the evening in an open courtyard, you will notice the difference.

For December, I would always bring a proper jacket for the evening even if the daytime forecast looks sunny.

Rain is possible, but do not plan the whole trip around it

December can bring rain to Marrakech. Long-term averages are around 31 mm for the month, usually spread across a small number of rainy days.

That does not mean you should expect a week of continuous grey weather. You may have a shower, a cloudy morning or a wet afternoon and then return to sunshine.

A light waterproof layer is enough for most city trips. More importantly, keep some flexibility if you are planning an Atlas Mountains day trip because conditions there can be completely different from Marrakech.

December days are shorter

December gives Marrakech around ten hours of daylight, with sunset roughly around 5:30 pm for much of the month.

This matters more than many travelers realize. If you want to visit gardens, walk a long Medina route or take photographs from a rooftop, do those things earlier in the day instead of starting at 4:00 pm.

I like to use the warmest part of the day for walking and outdoor sightseeing, then leave hammams, dinners and relaxed evenings for later.

One December Detail I Would Check Before Booking a Riad

Heating.

People often choose a Marrakech riad from photographs of the courtyard, tiles, rooftop and pool. Those things are important, but in December I would also ask one very simple question: how is the bedroom heated?

Traditional riads are built around an interior courtyard. Some rooms receive plenty of light, while others stay shaded for most of the day.

A room on the ground floor beside a cool courtyard can feel very different in December from an upstairs room that gets more winter sun.

This does not mean riads are a bad choice in winter. A good riad is still one of my favorite ways to stay in Marrakech.

Before you book, I would check the bedroom heating, hot water, extra blankets and the exact room category you are getting. If a warm bathroom matters to you, ask about that too.

The same advice applies to pools. Do not assume a hotel or riad pool is heated just because it is open in December. Ask before you book if swimming matters to your trip.

Is Marrakech Busy in December?

There is a big difference between the beginning and the end of December.

Early December usually feels easier. Marrakech is never empty, and places such as Jemaa el-Fnaa and the main souks are always active, but you normally have more flexibility with rooms, restaurants and activities.

As you move toward Christmas and the end of the year, international travel demand increases. Popular riads, luxury hotels, restaurants and hammams can become harder to book at the exact time you want.

I would not avoid late December because of the crowds. Just do not treat it like early December.

Best Things to Do in Marrakech in December

You do not need a special December itinerary for Marrakech. Most of the things that make the city interesting throughout the year are actually easier to enjoy when the weather is cooler.

Walk the Medina without the summer heat

For me, this is one of the biggest advantages of December.

In summer, long walks through the Medina can become tiring in the middle of the day. In December, you can take your time around the souks, old streets, palaces and neighborhoods without constantly looking for shade.

Start after breakfast, stop for tea or lunch and allow yourself time to wander rather than trying to rush between attractions.

Spend time in the souks

December works very well for shopping because you can stay in the souks longer without the summer heat.

You can look properly at rugs, leather, lamps, ceramics, textiles and other crafts instead of making quick decisions because you are tired or too hot.

The souks remain normal local commerce in December. They do not turn into a European Christmas market, even during Christmas week.

If you are buying something important, compare the quality before negotiating. Ask where it was made, understand what you are buying and agree clearly on the final price before discussing delivery or shipping.

Visit the palaces and gardens during the warm part of the day

December is comfortable for places where you spend time both indoors and outdoors.

I would plan gardens and longer outdoor visits between late morning and mid-afternoon when possible.

If you wake up to rain, change the order of the day instead of forcing the plan. Marrakech has enough indoor places, cafés, food experiences and hammams to move things around.

Have lunch on a rooftop

A clear December afternoon can be one of the nicest times for a rooftop lunch in Marrakech.

The sun feels good without the intensity of summer, and the winter light over the Medina and Atlas Mountains can be beautiful.

I am more careful with rooftop dinners. Once the sun disappears, the temperature drops quickly.

For an evening reservation, ask whether the restaurant has indoor seating, heaters or blankets instead of trusting photographs taken during the daytime.

Book a hammam

A hammam makes even more sense in winter after you have spent several hours walking around the Medina.

You can use a cooler afternoon for the hammam and then have a relaxed dinner instead of trying to fit another sightseeing stop into the day.

December Day Trips From Marrakech

A sunny morning in Marrakech does not tell you what the weather will be like in the Atlas Mountains or on the Atlantic coast.

That is the main thing to remember before booking December day trips.

Ourika Valley and the Atlas Mountains

The Atlas can be beautiful in December, but it is winter in the mountains.

Temperatures fall as you gain altitude, and snow is possible in higher areas such as Oukaïmeden. I would never promise snow on a particular day because conditions change.

Check the forecast and the road conditions shortly before you go. Take warmer clothes than you need in Marrakech and wear proper shoes if the ground is wet or cold.

Do not leave too late either. December daylight is shorter, and mountain roads are better enjoyed without rushing back after dark.

Agafay Desert

Agafay works well in December because it is close enough to Marrakech for an afternoon and sunset without turning the day into a long road trip.

The mistake is thinking that because it is called a desert area, it will stay warm after sunset.

It does not.

Agafay is open and exposed, so the temperature can fall quickly in the evening. Bring a jacket and, if you are staying for dinner, ask whether the venue has heating, blankets or an indoor option.

Essaouira

Essaouira is possible as a day trip in December, but the Atlantic wind can make it feel much cooler than Marrakech.

Take a windproof layer even when the weather forecast looks mild.

If you have enough time, I prefer staying one night in Essaouira instead of spending several hours on the road just to walk quickly through the town and return.

Do not try to make Merzouga a day trip

I still see travelers underestimate this distance.

Merzouga and the Erg Chebbi dunes are not a quick excursion from Marrakech. If you want the Sahara, give it a proper multi-day route.

With only one free day, choose the Atlas, Ourika or Agafay instead.

Where to Stay in Marrakech in December

For December, I would choose your area based on how you want to experience Marrakech, then check the winter details of the actual property.

Medina

Stay in the Medina if you want traditional riads, souks, old streets and the ability to walk to many of the historic sights.

December is when heating and room position become especially important.

Also check access before you arrive. Cars cannot reach every riad door, so a late arrival with heavy luggage can involve a short walk through the Medina.

Guéliz

Guéliz is easier if you prefer wider streets, modern cafés, restaurants, shops and straightforward vehicle access.

It is a good compromise for travelers who want Marrakech during the day but prefer a more conventional hotel setup in the evening.

Hivernage

Hivernage is better suited to larger hotels, spas, resort facilities and travelers looking for a higher-end hotel experience.

It also works well if easy taxi access matters more to you than sleeping inside the old Medina.

Are Marrakech Hotels More Expensive in December?

Early December and late December are not the same market.

At the beginning of the month, you generally have more choice and flexibility.

During the Christmas and end-of-year travel period, demand is stronger. The most popular riads, suites and luxury hotels can lose their best room categories first.

Some properties may also use minimum stays, deposits, stricter cancellation conditions or special meal requirements during the busiest dates.

Always read the room conditions before paying. A room being available does not necessarily mean it has the cancellation policy, heating or inclusions that you want.

If your dates are fixed, compare Marrakech hotels and riads early, especially for the final part of December.

What to Wear in Marrakech in December

Do not pack for Marrakech in December as if you are coming in summer.

You do not need heavy winter clothing for normal daytime sightseeing, but you do need layers.

• T-shirts or light tops for sunny afternoons
• a sweater or fleece
• a warm jacket for mornings and evenings
• long trousers
• comfortable closed walking shoes
• warm sleepwear
• a light rain jacket
• sunglasses and sunscreen

A scarf is useful for wind, dust and cooler evenings.

If you are going to the Atlas Mountains or staying in Agafay after sunset, take warmer clothing than you need for walking around Marrakech during the afternoon.

When Should You Book Marrakech in December?

If you are traveling in early December, you can normally keep more of the trip flexible.

I would still reserve a particular riad or hotel if you really want it rather than assuming the same room will be available when you arrive.

For the Christmas and end-of-year travel period, book the important parts earlier: accommodation, special dinners, popular hammams and any limited-capacity activity that matters to you.

I would leave ordinary Medina time flexible. You do not need reservations for every hour of a Marrakech trip.

Mistakes I Would Avoid in Marrakech in December

Packing only for the afternoon. You may feel warm at lunch and cold after sunset on exactly the same day.

Choosing a riad without asking about heating. The courtyard photograph will not tell you how the bedroom feels at night.

Planning every dinner outside. Rooftops are excellent when the sun is out, but December evenings can be chilly.

Expecting guaranteed snow in the Atlas. Snow is possible at higher altitude, but check the real conditions close to your trip.

Treating all of December the same. Early December is generally more flexible than the Christmas and end-of-year period.

Trying to squeeze Merzouga into a short Marrakech break. If you only have a few days, enjoy Marrakech properly and choose a closer excursion.

Is Marrakech Worth Visiting in December?

Yes. For sightseeing and walking, December works very well in Marrakech. It is a good time to visit if you enjoy local food, souks, historic places and comfortable daytime temperatures. You just need realistic expectations.

Marrakech in December is not a guaranteed hot-weather escape. The attraction is the contrast: sunny afternoons, cool Medina streets, warm lunches outside, chilly evenings, hammams, riads and the Atlas Mountains sitting beyond the city.

If you pack properly and choose accommodation with winter comfort in mind, December works very well.
